My favourite dish is called after my favourite meal of the day, siu yeh (late night snack). Nam Kee is like Burger King, everybody knows what's on the menu, the service is quick, the interior is hidious but you get a lot of bang for your buck. I went to Nam Kee way before the budhist temple was in China Town and way way before the movie 'Oysters of Nam Kee' was released.
Dit betekent dat ik harder voor mijn favoriete gerecht siu yeh fan moet vechten. Ik ben kind aan huis bij Nam Kee, ik ging er al eten toen ik nog ukkie was. En al jaren voor de film 'Oesters van Nam Kee'.

But recently I discovered something 'disturbing'. Maybe so disturbing I might be banned from Nam Kee forever for publishing the pictures of my recent discovery.
Lof en eer voor de beste Chinese Chinese restaurant van Nederland, maar toch kwam ik tot de schokkende ontdekking dat het niet altijd pluis is bij Nam Kee. Kijk en oordeel zelf.

On the last day of January 2013 I celebrated the birthday of her Majesty queen Beatrix of The Netherlands. If you follow my Instagram you might have noticed I celebrated her birthday for the second time this month. I always thought her birthday was on the 30th.-___-  I know, eating cake two days in a row, such a sacrifice. The cake is official called Leeuwarder hofdame, Leeuwardian lady-in-waiting. It was designed by students for the city of Leeuwarden. To remind people the royal history of the city. It's a layer cake filled with orange, honey, lemon creme and much more. I don't know the exact ingredients, I don't dissect my food, I just eat it.
31 januari 2013 heb ik de 75ste verjaardag van Hare Majesteit koningin Beatrix gevierd. Ondanks haar verzoek om het niet uitbundig te vieren, heb ik de bloemetje buiten gezet. Voor mijn doen dan. Als je mijn Instagram volgt, heb je waarschijnlijk al ontdekt dat ik mij in de dag vergist had. Ik was een dag te vroeg. Ik had speciaal een  speciale uitvoering van de Leeuwarder hofdame gehaald.

De hofdame is een petit-four met een halfronde oranje boog, die te associëren is met de hoepelrok van een hofdame. Als ingrediënten voor de laagjescake wordt er naast sinaasappel en honing ook citroencrème gebruikt. De naam verwijst naar het Nassauverleden van Leeuwarden. De hofdame is het winnende concept van een wedstrijd waarbij studenten Leisure Managment van Stenden Hogeschool culinaire specialiteiten voor Leeuwarden hebben ontwikkeld.

Vandaag mag ik alles weer herkansen en heb ik de verjaardag in stijl gevierd. 

By the way, it's impossible to find a Dutch flag in stores. It's allowed to hang out the Dutch flag on the birthday of the queen, on koninginnedag, Liberation Day and probably some other days but I'm pro-republicanism (don't misread republican), so I don't care about the birthdays of the Dutch princes and princesses. Nevertheless, long live the queen! I took a picture of a Dutch flag paid by the Dutch tax payers.:)
Ik heb de hele dag naar een Nederlandse vlag gezocht en kon er maar geen vinden. Het alternatief is een foto van de vlag naast het provinciehuis. Bedankt lieve belastingbetalers.;)

Ik heb ook een nieuwe kapsel aan laten meten, een asymmetrische boblijn. En mijn wenkbrauwen laten threaden. Ik ben blij met het resultaat, ik ben af van het gewicht aan mijn hoofd en ik hoop hiermee ook mijn wilde haren kwijt te zijn.:) Als je niet weet wat threading is, dan raad ik je aan om op het woord te klikken. Dit was voor mij de eerste keer dat ik mijn wenkbrauwen aan deze techniek bloot stelde. "Hoe was het, Yen?" Hoe zal ik het beschrijven? Als Obama ooit besluit om de Abu Ghraib-gevangenis te sluiten, dan is dit het alternatief om terroristen ter plekke te laten bekennen. Ik had het gevoel dat er bij elke beweging een stukje vel van mijn gezicht werd getrokken. En het geluid ... Een klas gillende speenvarkens, valt in het niets daarbij. Ik heb dan ook op een gegeven moment om pauze gevraagd. Mijn woorden waren zoiets als, "Even wachten, dit doet meer pijn dan ik dacht." Op een gegeven moment moest de schoonheidsspecialist even iets anders doen. Ik heb een letterlijk een wasbak gevuld met mijn tranen. Het zal mij niet verbazen als de gezegde 'Wie mooi wilt zijn, moet pijn lijden' bedacht is door een vrouw die haar wenkbrauwen liet threaden bij een middeleeuwse schoonheidsspecialiste. 

Yes Torty and why to shop at ethnic grocery stores.

Move over Twinkies, I have found back my lost love today. 
Move over Twinkies, ik heb Yes cake weer gevonden.

Yes cake (in German Yes Torty) was quite popular throughout the 90ies in The Netherlands. By introducing no brand name imitations Aldi and other discount grocery stores forced Nestlé to stop the production in 2003 (in The Netherlands much earlier). I haven't had a Yes cake since the late-nineties. Ow how I've missed it. I'm not the only one, even the Germans made a special 'We miss U Yes Torty' facebook page.

In de jaren negentig, ja zo oud ben ik al, was Yes zeer populair. Vraag je papa en mama maar, het is een lekkernij van voor de 'Taxioorlog'. Een lekker zacht cakeje omringd met chocolade en een verrukkelijke vulling. Door de evil Aldi en andere goedkope-meuk-winkels werd Nestlé gedwongen om te stoppen met de productie van Yes. Hij is nu tijdelijk in de aanbieding bij het Kruidvat. De Duitsers hebben zelfs een facebook fan page, waar ze ook terug snakken naar Yes Torty in het vaste assortiment.

The Germans really knew how to market the Yes Torty. A nice cake to eat with a cup coffee during stormy weather with your loved one. *swoon*
Twee landen twee vershillende manieren van reclame maken. De Duitsers gaan voor romantisch en gemütlickeit. De Nederlanders voor grote borsten en woordspeling, want daar zijn wij Nederlanders zo goed in.

The Dutch marketeers decided to shake off the romancic part. We like word jokes in this country. We Dutch tend to think that we are good at paronomasia.;) In the next video you will see a man watching several video responses to his dating video. The last lady is his neighbour and she reveals he's married with children. At the same time he swallows a Yes cake and says, 'That's nice.'

Save money at the ethnic grocery store.

Bespaar geld op boodschappen door te winkelen bij de toko. I'm still going strong with my part-time vegetarian meal plan.

Het part-time vegetarisch eten gaat nog steeds goed. Al eet ik meer vlees als ik moet sporten of als ik stress heb.

I've been eating more diverse the last half year. It's not true what they say about eating vegetarian saves you money. Only if you used to eat low quality meat. If I eat meat, I choose organic. But I won't force my host to prepare organic especially for me.

Ik las ooit dat als je geld wilt besparen meer vegetarisch moet eten. Nou ik at voorheen veel biologisch vlees en vervang dit nu met dure groenten, fruit en vleesvervangers. Ik ben niet goedkoper uit.

If you find it hard to save money on groceries, you can try your local ethnic grocery store. Last week I just need some apples, some chocolate and potatoes. I couldn't believe the grocery receipt was € 11,-.XD Oh man, the world has come to end! Ok, I will have to admit, I do my groceries at the most expensive grocery store in my country. I like to shop there because of their wide range of organic products. But the I'm fed up with the high food prices, so I've decided to look for a cheaper grocery store with the same quality food. Some months ago I have discovered a little Russian grocery store in my city. I go there for fresh mint leaves to make my own mint tea with dandelion 'honey'.

Toch probeer ik te besparen waar ik kan. Zo ben ik dol op verse muntthee. In de horeca ben je al gauw 2 à 3 Euro kwijt aan een glas. Een bosje muntbladen bij mijn lokale Russische supermarkt kost 50 cent. Dat is toch geen geld.:D

They sell this at restaurants for 2 or 3 Euros. I love mint tea, imagine how many I have devoured.

I'm also in love with these Russian dumplings. I'm not sure if this is pelmeni or pirogge. I will ask the owner the next time. 

Ik ben gek op deze deegballetjes. Het lijkt een beetje op knoedel, als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel. Ik zal de eigenaar de volgende keer vragen hoe het heet. Al ben ik een beetje bang voor Russen.

Although the owner of the store is very nice, I'm always a bit scared of Russian or Polish men, I blame Hollywood and Geert Wilders.;) Before you call me a bigot, I do have an explanation for my semi-bias thoughts. Russian men have two kinds of facial expressions, smile and neutral. I think they are the scariest when they look neutral. 

Begrijp me niet verkeerd, de eigenaar van de supermarkt is heel aardig. Ik geef de schuld aan Hollywood en Geert Wilders.;) Russische mannen hebben maar twee gezichtsuitdrukkingen, lachen en neutraal. En de neutrale look vind ik het engst, met van die enge ogen.

Talking about scary faces, in September we have elections ... again! What, number 25 in ten years? There's this dude from the Christian Democrats, Sybrand van Haersma Buma. And you think it's hard for you to pronounce his name? I always call him 'The Captain', cause I can't always remember his name and his face looks like the capatain from 'How I met your mother'. If you don't know the captain I will explain to you in a nutshell what a captain is. The captain is a character in HIMYM, he's the husband of one of Ted Mosby's love interests. They discover the bottom half of the captain is smiley and happy,

Over enge gezichten gesproken, in september mogen we weer lekker stemmen. De lijsttrekker van het CDA, Van Haersma Buma, heeft naast een zeer lange achternaam ook een eng hoofd. Ik weet niet of je ooit 'How I met your mother' hebt gevolgd maar daar hebben ze iemand die 'The Captain' heet. Hij is de man van één van Ted Mosbys liefjes. In de serie ontdekken ze dat hij een raar hoofd heeft. Het onderste gedeelte is aardig en lachend en het bovenste gedeelte bestaat uit eng kijkende ogen.

Hanasato Groningen

For some obligations I am in Groningen till the first of June. They have mentioned the crisis on the radio today. It's been going on since 20008, almost 4 years. In Japan you have Daiso, a 100 Yen shop. They sell everything for 105 Yen after tax. Did you know Daiso was a result of the crisis in Japan in the nineties. The last years you see a lot of discount stores in The Netherlands. Yesterday I saw this one, the Crisis Markt. It made me laugh cause the name and tagline is a total rip-off of the German but European based electronic retail store, similar to Radioshack in the US.
Tot en met 1 juni ben ik te vinden in Groningen. Ik hoorde vanmorgen dat de crisis al vier jaar aan de gang is. De laatste jaren zie je dan ook overal winkels opduiken met executieverkopen. Of het nou echt executieverkopen zijn, betwijfel ik ten zeerste. De meeste winkels hebben dezelfde voorraad, misschien gaat de ene naar de andere winkel failliet en rouleert zo de voorraad. In dat geval zijn ze niet aan het jokken. Ik kwam gisteren dit winkeltje in Groningen tegen, de Crisis Markt. Ik ben niet naar binnen gegaan. Ik moest wel lachen om het logo en de onderschrift. Doet het je niet denken aan een ander bedrijf?

Speaking of turtles, I saw this advertisement at the train station. If you walk away from the computer screen it might look like a penguin.;)

Over turtles gesproken, ik zag de volgende reclame op het station. Als je scheel kijkt dan lijkt het op een pinguīn.

Hanasato

I went to the Japanese restaurant Hanasato in Groningen yesterday. It's one of the two restaurants in The Netherlands serving shabu shabu in The Netherlands.

Bff RJ had gisteren een opdracht in Groningen dus we hadden op de Grote Markt afgesproken om wat te gaan eten. Na wat lang zoeken, ik ken de weg niet in Groningen, kwamen we terecht bij Hanasato. Ik wou voor pasta gaan maar RJ werd gelokt door het feit dat het restaurant een echte Japanse kok uit Tokio had. Dat had Doozoo in Leeuwarden ook maar die is allang verdwenen en dus smaakt de sushi naar niks.

The interior was clean and zen, very Japanese. A bit small though. 

De inrichting was westers met een tintje Japans. De toiletten zijn de eye cathers van het restaurant, het is versierd met Japanse spulletjes en super schoon.  

On the menu were, surprisingly enough, only two kinds of sushi! XD Normally I only eat sushi as a snack. And most of the sushi restaurants in The Netherlands are owned by Chinese people. Trust me I've been in Japan, I know good sushi. But when I'm hungry I will eat anything.

Het menu was enorm verrassend, ze hadden maar twee soorten sushi!XD Ik ben van mening dat sushi geen avondeten is, de Japanners eten het zelf als snack. 

As starter we had tatsuta age and tofu dengaku. I really recommend the tofu, it had a really nice sweet sauce on it. The restaurant uses a lot of organic ingredients and the menu is vegetarian friendly.

Als starter hadden we tatsuta age, gefrituurde gemarineerde kip. Ik vond het naar kip nugget smaken (maar dan wel met een goed stuk kippenvlees). Toen ik dat zei, keek RJ mij aan alsof ik zijn nieuw aangenomen cultuur had vernederd. -____- You have dishounered my new famiRy!!! -_____-

They work with fresh ingredients so unfortunately for me they had no high quality blue-fin tuna.You will need to order tuna sashimi in advance so they can order it freshly for you. I normally don't eat tuna cause of the overfishing of this little fella but the tuna they use is ICCAT certified (The international Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas). We also had miso soup and aji-gonomi shabu shabu. Shabu shabu is like Chinese hot pot but the meat is sliced very thin so the meat is ready in less than a minute. We also had a lot of fresh vegetables but I didn't want to make too many pictures cause, I was hungry.:D

Het restaurant gebruikt veel biologische producten en vegetariërs komen hier ook aan hun trekken. Om kosten, het milieu en jouw portemonnee te sparen moet je van tevoren bellen voor de tonijn sashimi. Ik eet zelf nauwelijks tonijn vanwege de overbevissing. Maar goede kwaliteit tonijn lust ik wel pap van. Nederland heeft alleen twee Japanse restaurants waar ze shabu shabu serveren, Amsterdam en Hanasato in Groningen. Shabu shabu lijkt op Chinees fonduen. Een pan met bouillon en je gooit het vlees en groentes in de pan. Een beetje roeren, vet afscheppen, het eten in een kom met saus dippen en klaar is Kees. Eén pan is genoeg voor twee. Don't be fooled by the picture that I've made, er zat meer vlees op het bord en het mandje lag vol met groente. Ik wil ook eten, mag ik? 

The green tea ice was quite nice but I didn't take it cause I hardly eat ice cream. I can't stand too much milk. 

De groene thee ijs was verrukkelijk maar helaas mijn darmpjes kunnen niet al zo goed tegen melk.

The bill was really reasonable, € 52,-. You see, we've spend 2 hours and 45 minutes in the restaurant. We had to wait a bit for our food, we didn't have a reservation. They only have one person in the kitchen, the cook from Tokyo.:D But hey I have learned to be more patient since a few years. The sun was shining and the birds were singing. I had a drink and a place to sit down and besides that, the food and the presentation made everything right.

Je moet je voorstellen het personeel bestaat uit twee obers en een Japanese kok die alles in zijn ééntje moet klaar maken. Dus ik vond het niet erg om lang op mijn overheerlijke eten te wachten. En daarnaast ga je uit eten om wat bij te kletsen en te genieten. Anders ga je maar naar de Mc Donalds of eet je thuis maar instant noodles. We hebben € 52,- betaald voor genoeg eten, 5 drankjes en ijs toe. 

Ow, and I saw the Japanese cook. He was stressed but moved like a ninja when he went to another room.

Oh, ik heb de Japanse kok gezien. Hij zag er gestresst uit. Hij rende als een ninja, snel en onopmerkzaam, van de ene ruimte naar de andere ruimte.

The Hague - Chinatown / Den Haag - Chinatown

The day before easter I was in The Hague for the reopening of the miniature city Madurodam.
De dag voor pasen was ik in Den Haag voor de heropening van Madurodam (ja ik weet, Madurodam staat in Scheveningen).

I started the day with a quick visit to a big thrift store outside the city centre. The area was a bit shady. Lets say I felt overdressed next to the people who were walking around there. Old cars everywhere. I saw a truck that reminded me of the truck in the movie 'Land of the Dead'.

De dag begon met een korte bezoek aan een kringloopwinkel. Het was een buurt waar allemaal Sjonnie's en Anita's rondliepen. Ik voelde me overdressed. Maar niet onveilig, een kale kip kan je niet plukken. Anyway, ik zag mijn apocalyptische droomwagen daar staan. Hij deed me aan de zombie-slasher-wagen denken in de film 'Land of the Dead'.

O.K., they don't really look the same but I see possibilities when a zombie apocalypse should happen. I have my emergency food package and I know where to find my zombie-slasher truck.

Waarschijnlijk niet helemaal hetzelfde, maar toch.

After 15 minutes in the thrift store I really had it. The owner didn't even try to make it representable. The thrift store in my area are always decorated and clean. Don't start about the prices. I'm not stingy but for used products they were quite expensive. 

Niet werkelijk de moeite waard om te bezoeken. Stel je een grote loods voor waar zelfs ik, met mijn ranke lijf, op mijn tenen moest lopen zodat er niks omviel.

Every big city in The Netherlands has a China town. Normally I don't go to China towns but my mom always dragged me to them so she can use me as a mule. I have no idea what to buy cause you always need a lot of different ingredients for really good asian meals. But I had a special mission this time, to find the vegetarian asian market.

Naast Madurodam nog een tweede missie, de vegetarische toko Sie San. Ik ben nu op een punt dat ik meer dan een vegetarische burger, tofu of gekookt eitje wil.

Everything in the store is vegetarian. Even the oyster sauce I've bought was vegetarian. 

Alles in de winkel was vegetarisch. Zelfs de oestersaus die ik gekocht heb.

First I was like, ".... Huh, oyster sauce is not vegetarian? Ofcourse, it's made of oyster, duh! -___-" At first I didn't know what to buy because the amount of products was overwhelming for me. But the shop employee was very patient and helpful. Since I couldn't take the frozen vegetarian meat or stuff with me, I went for the 'doritos' and the 'cat food'.:D

Ik ben niet zo snugger, maar zo leer je weer eens wat nieuws. Het is een klein winkeltje maar het aanbod is niet te beschrijven. Ik wist niet waar ik moest beginnen. Aangezien ik met de trein was, was diepvriesspul en vers spul geen optie. Ik ging maar voor de 'doritos' en het 'kattenvoer'.:D

You might be wondering, "Is this any good?" To be honest the soy pork steak tasted like you were eating bamboo but with meat taste. So I was told I had to soak them in water for 30 minutes. 

Als niet-vegetariër heb je zoiets van, "Is dat wel te vreten?' Nou, de soja pork steaks zijn best lekker. Ik rook eraan en ik had zoiets van, 'Op hoop van zegen.' Er werd mij verteld dat ik het een half uur moest laten wellen. De hoeveelheid water is op goed geluk.

4/5 pieces per person is more than enough. 4.5 stukjes zijn genoeg voor één persoon. Bij de sojabrokken heb je maar 25 gram p.p. nodig.

Na een half uur waren ze groter en waren ze ook wat meer flexibel geworden. 

Now you can add your favorite sauce to it.

Nu zijn ze klaar om te wokken, doe er wat oestersaus of soja bij. Of wat je zelf lekker lijkt.

I'm going to skip the city impressions and stick to China town in this post. After Madurodam we were starving and went back to the China town cause asian restaurants in bigger cities tend to serve more authentic asian meals then smaller areas. Sushi is for snack time so I've passed sushi restaurant Suzuran. But I couldn't resist to take some pictures of their cute maneki nekos.^^

Ik ga linea recta naar het avondeten die zaterdag. Mijn moeder zei altijd, "In de randstad is 'chinees' altijd beter dan bij ons in Limburg." Maastricht heeft ook een lekkere Dim Sum restaurant maar dat terzijde. Sushi eet ik als snack maar ik kon het niet laten om een foto van de maneki nekos te maken van sushi restaurant Suzuran.

Op de één of andere manier begonnen de winkelnamen daar allemaal met Fat.

My first feeling was bad when I saw this chinese restaurant. The sign above the entrance made it seem like a sex cinema. The inside of the restaurant wasn't any better. The menu was presented under a plate of glass, there was no hostess/host to welcome us and there was a huge waiting line. And the people in line were looking very grumpy. Most of the visitors were caucasian, most of the time not a good sign. And they had a fake tan, mostly acquired by using a tanning bed. They remind me of a Dutch commercial about a couple addicted to their tanning bed and shocked about their high energy bill.

Ik weet niet meer waarom ik bij Fat Kee (vette Kees in het chinees?) naar binnen ging, het entreebord boven de deur gaf mij het gevoel alsof het een seksbioscoop was. De sfeer was er niet fijn, mensen die moesten wachten op een plek waren chagrijnig, niemand begroette ons, de menukaarten lagen standaard onder een glazen plaat op de tafels. Het publiek was grotendeels niet chinees (wat meestal al niet een goed teken is) en de niet aziaten zagen eruit alsof ze uit de volgende Essent reclame waren gestapt.

The last fact made me run away and go to a fancier chinese restaurant. We ended up at Kee Lun palace. We had two delicious dishes and two pots with white rice and bakmi. We ordered too much. I thought my dish had no vegetables, the pictures are deceiving. What you see is less than you get.:) The furnishing was typical chinese and the service was quick. We had to share our table with others but I din't mind. The more the marrier.:) Our check was € 42,-, including 4 drinks and tip. We were also treated with oranges as dessert. The price was not bad. The next time I will only order one dish.
Ik had honger dus ik ging voor een meer sophisticated restaurant om de hoek, Kee Lun Palace. Het publiek was grotendeels Chinees dus we zaten goed. We moesten een grote tafel met twee anderen delen want het was druk. De inrichting was standaard maar we kregen wel een menukaart voorgeschoteld en niemand keek chagrijnig. Ik vond het 'tafelkleed' wel wat goedkoop, vellen kladpapier die je ook om de bakjes rijst krijgt bij de afhaalchinees. Daartegen hadden we snel ons eten op tafel en was het meer dan genoeg. We hadden twee schalen met grilled mix en ossenhaas met honing en walnoten. Op de plaatjes op het menu (ja, het is zo'n menu) zag ik geen groente dus vandaar dat we twee schalen hebben besteld. Maar de groentes zaten onder het vlees. Naast het eten komt standaard witte rijst bij. We hadden om een extra bami gevraagd en dat was ook goed. We hebben daarnaast nog 4 drankjes bij besteld en kregen gratis sinaasappelpartjes bij de rekening. De rekening was € 42,-, not bad. De volgende keer bestel ik maar 1 schaal want het eten was genoeg voor 4 personen.

I think the La Place restaurant is my favourite restaurant since I practically live there.:)

Waarschijnlijk bedoelde ik hier (want ik heb zelf de challenge in elkaar geflanst) bij welk restaurant ik graag eet. Bij La Place ben ik vaak te vinden. Ze zitten bijna overal in het land. Ze zijn duurder dan fastfood restaurants maar je krijgt daarvoor in de plaats biologish en kwalitatief goed eten. Je kunt kiezen tussen wokgerechten, pizza's, koffie/thee met gebak, belegde broodjes en lekkere ijs.

Besides the coupons for La Place restaurant, you also have coupons for other food departments from La Place (La Place is part of the department store Vroom & Dreesman/ V&D.

Naast de coupons voor het restaurant zijn er ook coupons voor andere food-afdelingen van de Vroom & Dreesman. Als je alleen maar naar het restaurant gaat, hoef je alleen de eerste pagina te printen. Belast het mileu wat minder.

La Place also has free wifi and they won't kick you out if you are working on your laptop for hours with just one coffee. Besides that La Place is also a Dopper-refill-point. If you don't have a Dopper bottle don't worry, they also have free water next to the silverware and napkins next to the cash registers.

Het fijne aan La Place is dat ze ook gratis Wifi hebben. Ze zullen je niet wegjagen als je meer dan 2 uur aan het tafel zit te werken. Daarnaast is de La Place ook een watertappunt van de Dopper. Heb je geen Dopper, geen probleem. Bij het bestek staat kannen water met bijbehorende glazen. Je mag er lekker gratis van drinken.:) Lief van de V&D.
